Garage spring cleanup...

Imagine a beautiful spring day. You want to go biking, go fishing or even enjoy a picnic with your family. When you
enter your garage to gather your gear and head to having fun you have a tremendous surprise: your stuff is all over
the place, on the floor, messed up in corners, misplaced in various drawers. Organizing your garage is as easy as
figuring out where to start. The first thing is to purchase some cabinets, some shelves and hammer a series of nails into
the walls.

The storing and sorting goes as follows. Categorize each object and place it in a place specially designed for it. For
example sporting gear should be placed in a cabinet or on some shelves, tools should be placed in drawers or hung on
to some peg boards. Be ruthless about throwing away and don’t think twice before you throw away anything that you haven’t used recently or anything that’s broken. If you haven’t repaired it yet, chances are you won’t repair it. Seasonal gear should also be sorted, boots and out-of-season coats should be organized in small closets.

After you finish organizing, sorting and throwing away unwanted items you will be surprised to see your garage  floor and corners again. Maybe your car will fit in the garage again.

Installing Mini Blinds...

Measuring The first thing to do, is to determine the position of the mini blinds, deciding if they will be inside or outside of the window. Inside mounting will look more customized, although outside mounting will provide better control of lighting.

For inside frame mounting, measure the width between the points where the brackets will be placed; top, middle, and bottom. Record the narrowest of the measurements you receive. Now, measure the length from the top inside casing of the windowsill. At least 1 inch of flat surface will be needed on the inside casing in order to attach the brackets.

For outside frame mounting, you’ll need to measure the overall width of the area to be covered. Hang your mini blinds outside of the frame if there is less than 1″ of flat surface on the inside casing. The measurement should overlap the window by at least 1 1/2″ on each side.

Installation

1. Determine if you want inside or outside mounting, and measure your window accordingly. 2. After you have purchased the correct size of mini blinds, remove the window stop from the top of the window on the window casing. 3. Screw the brackets that came with your blinds to the side window casing at the top, using either two or three screws per bracket. 4. With the wand on the left and the lift cord on the right, slide the mini blinds into the brackets you just installed. 5. Once you have the mini blinds in place, secure the caps over the brackets. 6. If the blinds are too long, remove the slats from the bottom of them, as this should help to get them to the appropriate height.

Water Features Can Transform Your Backyard...

How do you take a boring backyard and transform it into something special? Add a water feature. Water features can transform the ordinary into something incredible as well as hide road noise creating a peaceful and tranquil environment. So all you have to decide is what kind of feature you want. Here are some of the options.

Fountains

Garden fountains are one of the easiest water features to add to your yard. Most home improvement stores and garden centers will carry do it yourself kits. Choose from a large variety including stand alone fountains and those that hang on your wall. All you have to do to install it is position the fountain, fill it with water and plug in the fountains pump. If you want to get creative, you could even make your own fountain out of new or old pots, a little bit of plastic tubing and a small water pump.

Ponds

Ponds involve a little more work but are still easy to do in the hands of a competent do it yourselfer. Once again, kits are readily available from your home improvement or garden center. To put in a pond you will have to first dig a hole in a suitable location. Ponds are normally only a few feet deep but it is still a lot of work to dig out all of that soil. Next you will either line the hole with a flexible pond liner or insert a formed hard plastic liner. Then add rocks and a pond filtration system. After treating the water, you can then add plant life and even fish if you so desire.

Waterfalls

If you want more than a basic pond, you could try installing a waterfall. This installation is a little more complicated and you might want to consult a professional landscaper. It does take some experience to plan out the flow of water on a waterfall.

Waterfalls are also an excellent feature to add to an existing swimming pools landscaping. They will make an ordinary pool a sight to behold.

With all of the options, it can be hard to decide what type of water feature to add to your yard. Go over your options and choose the type that best fits your budget and your do it yourself experience level.

3 Tips in Landscaping your Garden...

Landscaping is usually a fairly big task, consuming much time and energy. But before you hire that professional, here are some tips that could save both time and money.

1. Spend some time thinking about exactly how you want the final design to be. You need to take account of the style and function of your landscape. Do you want to include an area for entertaining? A barbeque? Is there to be an area for children to play, a fishpond or a swimming pool? An idea of the plants you want to be there will also help. Focus on the area where you spend most of your time. That’s a good place to start.

2. Think twice before hiring a pro. An independent designer might cost you hundreds of dollars when you may be able to access free plans on the internet or at a nursery. But if you have an awkward block such as very steep ground, a pro might give you the expertise to save costly mistakes.

3. The style of your home must be taken into account. If you have a rural cottage, formal gardens surrounding it will look out of place. Think also about your lifestyle. Do you want to spend hours caring for many beds of annuals or pruning beds of roses? If so, go ahead and plant them, but if you’d rather spend your free time at the beach, then go for an easy-care garden and landscape.

Here are the various landscape styles you can choose for your own garden:

a. Formal. This style uses lots of straight lines and perfect geometrical shapes. Orderly arrangement of plants instead of random positioning is employed. Close arrangement and pruning is seen on many landscaped gardens with this style.

b. Informal. This kind of landscaping workds well with cosy cottages. Beds with curved edges instead of straight lines and random placement of plants suit this landscape style.

c. English Garden. This style emphasizes the harmony between the house’s architecture and the garden.

d. Formal/Informal Garden. This style often comes with a brick walkway that exudes formality. This walkway leads to the rear with a circle of plants. The arrangement of plants resembles the English garden style but it has no formal borders.

e. Oriental. It is often the kind of garden found in small backyards. It uses rocks, evergreens and water. A wide variety of plants create several interesting angles with this style.

f. Woodland. This landscaping suits a house that has a wooded backyard and sloping ground.

Buyers Guide...

Deep cleaning vacuums
The typical features with these types of vacuums include rotating brushes that agitate the carpet pile and loosen the dirt for better clean.  There are some models that offer a handy automatic tool conversion button or switch that you can push or flip as you move from carpet to hardwood floor.

Hand held vacuums
Hand held vacuums are light weight, can be corded or cordless, and you can even mount most of them on the wall if you prefer.  The performance of the cordless models will depend on the charge of the battery, as the battery power drops, so will the suction power.

The two types of hand held vacuums include straight suction and suction with a power brush.  If you are considering a hand held vacuum cleaner, you should consider its primary purpose, if you plan to use it on a regular basis or occasionally on smaller jobs.

Broom vacuums
Stick or broom vacuums are great for smaller type apartments, quick clean ups in the kitchen, or a family room.  The benefit of a broom vacuum is the light weight.  If you have trouble pushing your heavier upright around, the broom vacuum may come as a relief.  You’ll also have the option of getting your vacuum corded or cordless.

They usually weight 2 – 7 lbs. and allow you to easily store them in the closet, as they take up a minimum amount of space.  For quick disposal of the dirt and debris, most models are also bagless  as well.

Wet or Dry vacuums
The wet/dry vacuum combination may very well be the most versatile vacuum cleaner on the market today, with numerous attachments and functions it is a  very handy machine to have around your home.  The canister types can vary from the smaller 6 gallon sizes to the larger 22 gallon sizes.

The HP ranges as well, from 2 to 10 HP.  You should always try to match the size of the unit to the  size of the job and frequency of use.

Upright vacuums
One of the most popular features of an upright vacuum cleaner is the bagless system.  In addition to the increased performance, there is no need  to purchase any bags.  Emptying the canister can be a little dusty, although it’s still better than messing with bags.

Most upright models come with a standard set of attachments that may even include an upholstery tool, a crevice tool, and even an extension wand. A retractable cord and manual or automatic pile adjustments are other common features.  A HEPA filter is another common and popular feature found with most upright vacuums.

Canister vacuums
Canister vacuum cleaners normally include retractable cords.  Considering the fact that most cords are around 25 foot in length, this feature will prevent you from having to drag the cord around and  possibly damage furniture.  A push of a button or a slight tug on the cord will retract it into the canister of the vacuum.

The nozzle can be one of two types, nozzle or power nozzle.  To get your carpet as clean as possible, it is recommended that you use the power nozzle, which will agitate the carpet and loosen up the dirt for deeper cleaning.

Another feature worth looking for is a suction control switch, as this allows you to adjust the flow of air for cleaning delicate material such as upholstery and drapery.

When choosing your vacuum cleaner, you should always choose the one you like best.  The best vacuum for the job is the one you should choose, as things will work out much better that way.

How to Choose Bathroom Accessories and Floor Regis...

Floor registers make nice accessories for bathroom. Online you will find a wide array of floor registers, which include Victorian Scrolls, Contemporaries, etc. Victorian is my favorite, yet not everyone has the same tastes or styles.

How to choose Victorian floor registers?
When choosing Victorian floor registers keep in mind that you have the options of choosing Dark Bronze, Pewter, and the Polished/Lacquered Brass. Elgan Brass is one of the higher quality floor registers. The brass texture was built from superb hangs that knew their craft. Brass registers will bring in style whether you have a country setting, or master bath. The registers add a unique touch to the room. Victorian styles give you the options of choosing Antique Brass and more. The registers are great, since it ventilates the room, and reduces mold and mildew build-up.

How to choose contemporary floor registers?
Contemporary floor registers include the Antique, Polished/Lacquered Brass, Dark Bronze, and Pewters. I prefer the Polished/Lacquered Brass, since it glows. The registers are designed to set of country atmospheres. For the master bath, you may want to choose the Polished Brass. The registers are coated with powders and dampers, which means that the register will last a long time to come.

How much do contemporary registers cost?
It depends on where you purchase the product. You can purchase the Antique Brass for around $23 online. I would shop around, since you can compare prices and texture. As well, you can view other registers, which may be of higher quality, yet at a price you can afford.

How does my floor factor into the registers design?
Good question, you should always consider your floors, walls, and overall style of your bathroom before purchasing floor registers. If you have a country setting however, most of the floor registers will go with your room. However, if you have a luxury bath, or master bath, the gold brass is the best choice. Dark Bronze will work as well, providing you have an atmosphere that matches the color.

What if I like a floor register that does not match my flooring, walls, etc?
You want to view images of floor registers, since many will match nearly all colors, patterns and designs. If you feel that the register you like does not match, you may want to adjust your style. Ultimately, you can change the flooring and wall color to match your choice of floor registers.

How do I choose two registers?
If your bathroom allows room for 2 registers then try to buy the same style. You don’t want to install a Bronze and Brass in the same environment.

What if I have wood floors, how do I choose color?
If you have wood floors, then you have a country setting. Still, you can select registers that will go with the texture of your room. Antiques are great, yet with wooden floors I find that the Dark Bronze is the choice of registers. The bronze seems to give the room a traditional effect.

How do I choose floor registers for bathrooms with rugged areas?
Try to match the registers to fit your rugs. If you have rugs in your bathroom, try to keep the registers however away from the fabric, especially if heat comes from the register. Heat can build, which can catch fire.

Floor registers make great bathroom accessories, since the registers will match nearly any style.

Why should I buy floor registers?
If you do not have floor registers in your bathroom, mold and mildew will build-up, which is bad for your health. In bathrooms where no registers are available, orange, gray, and black mold often develops.
