As history indicates, the first model vacuum cleaner wasn’t even a vacuum cleaner at all, more of a carpet sweeper.  This was invented by a man named Daniel Hess, who in 1860 patented a machine that featured rotating brushes on the bottom and bellows that  helped to create suction.

However, there is no evidence that this very machine was ever produced. Some 40 years or so later, in  1908, James Spangler of Canton, Ohio received a patent for the very first portable electric vacuum cleaner.  It was in fact his cousin in law, William Hoover, who lent his name to the legendary company that produces quality vacuum cleaners even today.

For more than 150 years, the vacuum cleaner has been improved upon greatly.  From doing your weekly vacuuming of your home, doing a spring cleaning, or simply leaving the vacuuming up to the robot,  there is a vacuum out there suited to your needs.

With upright, canister, HEPA filtered, bagged and bagless, there is always a vacuum cleaner for your needs on the market.

There are actually 2 ways in which a vacuum cleaner cleans.  The first, and the way we rate a vacuum on most is how debris and dirt is picked up off of a carpet and the floor.  When you are searching for a vacuum, keep in mind the power of the suction motor, as this is very important for getting good performance.

Canister vacuums on the other hand have a retractable electric cord, which is much more convenient than wrapping the cord back around the neck of the vacuum.  It is often times easier to push the light weight canister vacuum head as opposed to pushing  a canister style vacuum.

When you choose your vacuum cleaner, keep in mind what you plan to vacuum.  There are several designs and types intended for different uses.  If you have hardwood floors, you obviously wouldn’t want to use a carpet vacuum.

Some power tools are very loud. You will want to wear ear plugs or other ear protection. Hearing loss is a serious issue, and you should do all you can to maintain your current hearing level. A respirator is a good idea if you will be working with any power tool that creates dust including sanders and routers. It is a good idea to make sure you have a source of fresh air getting into your work area as well. A respirator ensures you won’t be inhaling harmful chemicals or dust that is generated.

Power tools definitely are fun to use and reduce the time it takes to complete a project. However, it is essential that you take the time to wear the proper safety equipment when you operate them. The investment is well worth saving your from injuries or even death. It doesn’t matter how careful you are, how many times you have used the power tool before, how big of a hurry you are in, or how small of a job it is. Accidents involving power tools happen in a split second, so do your best to prepare for them.

Wipe Out Those Winter Garden Woes...

Do you look at your garden at this time of the year and wish it were more alive? Well, as those of us who have their homes on the market have found out – there are ways to make your front yard look attractive even in the dead of winter!

One thing you don’t want is murky green garden paths. Regularly power- hose your paths and decks so that the slimy green mold can’t take hold! Also check for it at the base of your fences and house. If you live in a mild winter area, then you may need to keep cutting the lawn, but lift the mower slightly so that the grass is not cut so short in the winter..

If you are showing your home you will probably want to leave your potted plants in their ceramic containers on show. If this is the case, keep an eye on the weather forecasts and pop some bubble wrap over them if the weather is going to freeze.

One non-gardening way to pretty up a front yard while the plants hibernate, is to invest a few dollars in some inexpensive path lighting. The push-in mushroom lamps look quite effective when turned on, and will give your front yard some definition.

Hopefully, you have already invested in a supply of evergreens, if not, now is the time for you to examine your yard and decide where new trees should be placed. Remember to always include some of the blue fir, and there are bronze, yellow, silver and variegated evergreens to choose from. Many of us forget the brightness of berry evergreens like holly and rowan trees. (Sometimes referred to as mountain ash or Pyrus Americana)

Winter flowers are scarce and are all the more appreciated because of it. Among the choice is pink viburnam as well as winter honeysuckle and winter jasmine – all have blooms (and the last two smell delightful). Bedding plants such as winter pansies and winter heather also add color.

Apart from attractive tree bark, there is also a modern day fad for decorative cabbages in cream and purple, and these are a hardy decoration in the yard.

If you feel you can’t wait for your garden to wake up and come alive, then be sure to add some of the early bulbs into your planting plan. If your house is on the market, you can tell your prospective buyers that the new owner will be moving into a view of spring bulbs.

If you are not planning a move yet, then snow drops, daffodils and crocuses all come out in bloom very early and can be your reminder that spring is just around the corner!
